Is this just hype?

Companies like Microsoft, Sun, Oracle, and IBM all compete for developers' mind share. All of these companies spend millions of dollars advertising their "latest" and "greatest" offerings. They are offering the next best way to "solve all of your problems." They want you to believe they have the solution to supercede all other solutions.

As developers, how do we know when to take the hype seriously?

Does the hype make sense?

One way to see through the hype is to use common sense. A few questions can quickly determine if something is hype or if it has substance. Consider the hype that Object Oriented Programming (OOP) received in the past. A decade ago, OOP was the rave. Did it make sense? From a developer's perspective, the concept of encapsulating code into fully functioning units that could be reused and expanded upon did made sense. It was a great promise. With deadlines always looming for developers, who wouldn't want re-useable, fully tested units of code to help cut down development time? The hype made sense...
